This research investigates the effects poverty of the elderly on the mental health of the elderly by classifying depression and self-esteem using the 7-year accumulated data of KoWePS(Korean Welfare Panel Study). In the process, this study examined that poverty has a direct impact on mental health of the elderly and used hierarchical regression analysis in order to verify the moderating effect of employment conditions in the relationship between poverty and mental health. The results of this study are as followed: Poverty of the elderly impacts on depression and self-esteem and employment conditions appeared the moderating effect in the relationship between poverty and mental health. The results indicate that poverty of the elderly has a negative effect on mental health and in the process it is appeared that labor market participation of elderly people buffers the influence. Therefore we can suggest that employment promotion policy for elderly and the expansion method of senior employment programs are urgently needed in order that poor elders are improved mental health.
